僕のおじさんは「ぐうちゃん」という。彼の名は津田由起夫、三十八歳。彼はいそうろう。
僕の母親の弟だ。いつも母に怒られている。学生のころに外国のいろんな所を旅していたらしく、気づいたときには僕の家に住み着いていた。そして、長いこと「ぐうたら」しているから、いつのまにか「ぐうちゃん」というあだ名になってしまった。でも、ぐうちゃんは変わった人で、そう言われるとなんだかうれしそうだ。それを見て僕の母はまた怒る。怒るけど「これ、ぐうちゃんの好物。」なんて言いながら、ご飯の支度をしているから母もちょっと変わっている。
僕の家は東京の西の郊外にあって、父の祖父が建てた。古い家だけれど、ぐうちゃんが「いそうろう」できる六畳間があって、そこでぐうちゃんは「ぐうたら」している。父は単身赴任で仙台にいて、週末に帰ってくる。ぐうちゃんがいると何か力仕事が必要になったときに安心だから、と言って、父はぐうちゃんがいそうろうをしていることを歓迎しているみたいだ。
ぐうちゃんは、家にいるときはたいてい本を読んでいるか、唯一のタカラモノであるカメラの掃除、点検などをしている。全く「ぐうたら」ばかりでもなくて、たまに一週間ぐらい留守にするときもある。ぐうちゃんにきくと、そんなときは、全国を回って測量の仕事をしているという。一度、家に持って帰った測量の道具を見せてもらったけれど、すごく精密な望遠鏡という感じだった。レンズの中をのぞくと中にいっぱい目盛りが付いていて、ダイヤルでピントを合わせる。いかにもプロの人の道具みたいで格好いい。かといって、ぐうちゃんは、測量の専門家でもないらしい。僕の母は、ぐうちゃんのそういう落ち着かない仕事のしかたが気に入らないようだ。「ちゃんと就職して早く独立しなさい。そうして『いそうろう』から卒業しなさい。」といつも怒る。
当のぐうちゃんは、母に怒られても、「でも、まあもう少し。」などと訳のわからないことを言う。すると、母は今度は僕に向かって、「ぐうちゃんみたいな大人になってはだめだからね。」と言う。本当に文句ばかりだ。
そんな「ぐうちゃん」だけど、僕はぐうちゃんが大好きだ。ぐうちゃんの話は文句なしにおもしろいのだ。母は、「みんなほら話なんだからそんなのを聞いている暇があったら勉強していなさい。」と言うけれど、宿題をするよりよっぽどおもしろい。だから、僕がぐうちゃんの話を聞くときはたいていぐうちゃんの部屋に行く。

その日も、夕食の後に僕はぐうちゃんの部屋でほら話を聞いていた。
でっかい動物の話だった。
「悠君。世界でいちばん長い蛇は何だか知っているか。」
ぐうちゃんは、細い目をめいっぱい見開くようにして僕にきいた。それは、いつもおもしろい話をするときのぐうちゃんの癖で、だから、僕はぐうちゃんのその表情が好きだ。でも、今日は話のテーマがちょっと幼稚すぎる。とはいえ、宿題するよりはずっとおもしろそうだから、母に見つかるまでその話を聞いていることにした。
「アナコンダとかいうやつだね。アフリカの密林あたりにいる。」
「悠君は地理に弱いんだなあ。アナコンダがいるのはアマゾンだよ。現地の人はスクリージュとよんでいて、これはポルトガル語で水蛇という意味だ。長く太くなりすぎて蛇行するには地球の重力が負担になって水に入ったんだ。」
「泳いでいて出会ったら嫌だな。飲み込まれちゃいそうだ。」

ぐうちゃんの話はいつも怪しい。僕がおもしろがればいいと思っているのだ。
「そんなのうそだろ。だって馬の背は人間よりはるかに高いし、体重だって普通五百キロはあるって何かの本で読んだよ。アナコンダがいくら大きいといってもそんな大きな口は開けられないだろ。ありえねえ。」
「ありえねくないんだよ。」
ぐうちゃんは変な言い方をした。
「立っている馬をそのまま大口を開けて飲み込むわけじゃないんだ。まず馬の首のあたりにかみついて馬をひっくり返す。それから馬の体に巻き付いて馬の脚の骨をバキバキ折っていく。飲み込みやすいように全体を丸くしていくんだなあ。それから、ゆっくり、飲んでいくんだ。」
本当かなあ。力のこもった話し方を聞いていると、うっかりぐうちゃんのほら話の世界に取り込まれてしまいそうになる。でもその怪しさがやっぱりおもしろい。
「悠君。アマゾンの動物はみんな大きいんだ。ナマズもでっかいのがいるぞ。どのくらいだと思う？」
どうせほら話だから僕も大きく出ることにした。
「そうだね。じゃ一メートル！」
「ブップー。」
外れの合図らしいけど、まるっきり子供扱いだ。
「アマゾンでは普通に三メートルのナマズがいるよ。」
「うそだあ。ありえねえ。」
さすがに頭にきた。僕を小学生ぐらいと勘違いしているんだ。
「うそじゃないよ。口の大きさが一メートルぐらいだよ。」
ぐうちゃんはまた細い目になった。僕をからかって喜んでいる目だ。
「ふうん。」
なんだかばかばかしくなったので気のない返事をした。
「あ、信じてないだろう。じゃあがらっと変わって、きれいで小さい宇宙の話をしようか。」
ぐうちゃんは話の作戦を変えてきた。宇宙の話は好きだ。例えば宇宙には果てがあるのか、とか二重太陽のある星の話とかだ。ところが、ぐうちゃんの話は、地球の中の宇宙の話だった。
「北極には、一年に一度流氷が解けるときに小さな氷の惑星ができるってイヌイットの間ではいわれている。アイスプラネットだ。めったに現れないので、それを見た者はその年いいことがいっぱいあるといわれている。」
「童話か何かの話？」
「いや、本当にある話だよ。見ることのできた者を幸せにするという、地球の中にある小さな小さな美しい氷の惑星。いい話だろ。」
「やっぱりありえねえ。俺、風呂の時間だし。」
ぐうちゃんは続けて話したそうだったけれど、母親が風呂に入れと大きい声で呼んだので、それを口実に逃げることにした。ぐうちゃんは、やっぱり今どきの中学生をなめているのだ。

翌日、学校に行く途中で、同じクラスの吉井と今村に会った。初めはどうしようかと思ったけど、馬も飲んでしまうでっかいアナコンダや、三メートルもあるナマズの話はおもしろかったし、氷の惑星の話も、本当だったらきれいだろうなと思ったから、つい吉井や今村にその話をしてしまった。二人は僕の話が終わると顔を見合わせて、「ありえねえ。」「証拠見せろよ。」と言った。「そんなほら話、小学生でも信じないぞ。」そう言われればそうだ。だから、部活が終わって大急ぎで家に帰ると、僕は真っ先にぐうちゃんの部屋に行って、「昨日の話、本当なら証拠の写真を見せろよ。」と無愛想に言った。ぐうちゃんは少し考えるしぐさをして、「そうだなあ。」と言って、目をパチパチさせている。
「これまで撮ってきた写真をそろそろちゃんと整理して紙焼きにしないと、と思っているんだ。そうしたらいろいろ見せてあげるよ。」
むっとした。そんな言い逃れをするぐうちゃんは好きではない。なんかぐうちゃんに僕の人生が全面的にからかわれた感じだ。吉井や今村に話をした分だけ損をした。いや失敗した。僕までほら吹きになってしまったのだ。
それから夏休みになってすぐ、ぐうちゃんはいつもより少し長い仕事に出た。関東地方の各地の川の測量をするということだった。僕は人生を全面的にからかわれて以来、あまりぐうちゃんの部屋に行かなくなっていたから、気にも留めなかった。
夏休みも終わり近く、いつものように週末に帰ってきた父と母が話しているのが、風呂場にいる僕の耳にも入ってきた。
「僕たちは、都市のビルの中にいるからなかなか気がつかないけど、由起夫君は若いころに世界のあちこちへ行っていたから、日本の中にいたら気がつかないことがいっぱい見えているんだろうね。なんだかうらやましいような気がするな。」
母は、珍しくビールでも飲んだらしく、いつもよりもっと強烈に雄弁になっている。

父が何かを答えているようだったが、はっきりとは聞こえなかった。ただ、僕のことでぐうちゃんが責められるのは少し違う気がする。そう思うと、電気の消えたぐうちゃんの部屋が急に寂しく感じられてきた。

それから、ぐうちゃんがまた僕の家に帰ってきたのは、九月の新学期が始まってしばらくしたころだった。顔と手足が真っ黒になっていて、パンツ一つになると、どうしても笑いたくなって困った。
残暑が厳しい日だった。久しぶりにぐうちゃんのほら話を聞きたいと思った。またからかわれてもいい。暑いから、今度は寒い国の話が聞きたい感じだ。
ところが、ぐうちゃんの話は、でっかい動物のでも、暑い国のでも、寒い国の話でもなかった。
「旅費がたまったから、これからまた外国をふらふらしてくるよ。」

十月の初めに、ぐうちゃんは小さな旅支度をして「いそうろう」を卒業してしまった。
出発の日、僕は、なんて言っていいのかわからないままぐうちゃんの前に立っていた。ぐうちゃんは僕に近づき、あの表情で笑った。そして、なにも言わずに僕の手を握りしめ、力のこもった強い握手をして、大股で僕の家を出ていった。
「ほらばっかりだったじゃないか。」
「いそうろう」がいなくなってしまった部屋の前で、僕はそう思った。

ぐうちゃんから外国のちょっとしゃれた封筒で僕に手紙が届いたのは、それから四か月ぐらいたってからだった。珍しい切手がいっぱいはってあった。
「あのときの話の続きだ。以前若いころに、北極まで行ってイヌイットと暮らしていたことがあるんだ。そのとき、アイスプラネットを見に行こう、と友達になったイヌイットに言われてカヌーで北極海に出た。アイスプラネット。わかるだろう。氷の惑星だ。それが北極海に本当に浮かんでいたんだ。きれいだったよ。厳しい自然に生きている人だけが目にできる、もう一つの宇宙なんだな、と思ったよ。地上十階建てのビルぐらいの高さなんだ。そして、海の中の氷は、もっともっとでっかい。悠君にもいつか見てほしい。若いうちに勉強をたくさんして、いっぱい本を読んで、いっぱいの『不思議アタマ』になって世界に出かけていくとおもしろいぞ。世界は、楽しいこと、悲しいこと、美しいことで満ち満ちている。誰もが一生懸命生きている。それこそありえないほどだ。それを自分の目で確かめてほしいんだ。」
手紙には、ぐうちゃんの力強い文字がぎっしりつまっていた。
そして、封筒からは写真が二枚出てきた。一枚は人間の倍ぐらいあるでっかいナマズの写真。もう一枚は、北極の海に浮かぶ、見た者を幸せにするという氷の惑星の写真だった。
