【イスラマバード＝丸山修】カーター米国防長官は２１日、アフガニスタンを事前予告なしで訪問し、ガニ大統領と会談した。

共同記者会見でカーター氏は、「部隊を削減する時期の変更を含めた選択肢をオバマ大統領が検討している」と述べ、駐留米軍の撤収ペースを遅らせる可能性を示唆した。カーター氏は１７日の長官就任後、初めての外遊。

アフガン駐留米軍は昨年末に戦闘任務を終了したが、旧支配勢力タリバンのテロ攻勢で治安回復の兆しは見えず、ガニ政権は米国に支援強化を求めている。ガニ氏は来月訪米し、オバマ氏と直接話し合う見通しだ。
