僕のおじさんは「ぐうちゃん」という。彼の名は津田由起夫、三十八歳。彼はいそうろう。
僕の母親の弟だ。いつも母に怒られている。学生のころに外国のいろんな所を旅していたらしく、気づいたときには僕の家に住み着いていた。そして、長いこと「ぐうたら」しているから、いつのまにか「ぐうちゃん」というあだ名になってしまった。でも、ぐうちゃんは変わった人で、そう言われるとなんだかうれしそうだ。それを見て僕の母はまた怒る。怒るけど「これ、ぐうちゃんの好物。」なんて言いながら、ご飯の支度をしているから母もちょっと変わっている。
僕の家は東京の西の郊外にあって、父の祖父が建てた。古い家だけれど、ぐうちゃんが「いそうろう」できる六畳間があって、そこでぐうちゃんは「ぐうたら」している。父は単身赴任で仙台にいて、週末に帰ってくる。ぐうちゃんがいると何か力仕事が必要になったときに安心だから、と言って、父はぐうちゃんがいそうろうをしていることを歓迎しているみたいだ。

当のぐうちゃんは、母に怒られても、「でも、まあもう少し。」などと訳のわからないことを言う。すると、母は今度は僕に向かって、「ぐうちゃんみたいな大人になってはだめだからね。」と言う。本当に文句ばかりだ。
そんな「ぐうちゃん」だけど、僕はぐうちゃんが大好きだ。ぐうちゃんの話は文句なしにおもしろいのだ。母は、「みんなほら話なんだからそんなのを聞いている暇があったら勉強していなさい。」と言うけれど、宿題をするよりよっぽどおもしろい。だから、僕がぐうちゃんの話を聞くときはたいていぐうちゃんの部屋に行く。

その日も、夕食の後に僕はぐうちゃんの部屋でほら話を聞いていた。
